It was the cold season, but the time surrounded by snow was something new for the children, and we stayed warm with the kotatsu and heaters.

How to spend snowy days in Hanamaki

Kenji Miyazawa’s hometown

Hanamaki is the hometown of the writer Kenji Miyazawa. His children’s story “Yuki-watari” (Snow Crossing) is a winter tale of children walking over hard-frozen snowfields, invited by a young fox to a magic-lantern show. You will find Kenji’s picture books, novels and manga all around the house, and the main upstairs bedroom is themed on “Night on the Galactic Railroad.”

Hot springs close by

Hanamaki Onsen is nearby. Soak in a hot spring in the snow, then come back to a house that is yours alone. (The house itself has no hot spring. Please check day-bathing hours with each onsen facility in advance.)

A warm house for winter

The house has 3 air conditioners, 2 FF heaters and an electric kotatsu (heated table). Cook what you buy locally in the kitchen and eat together around the table; there is a washer and dryer. With no other guests, families with small children can relax.

Why two nights or more

In winter, roads can be snowy or icy. With two nights or more, you keep one whole day for the snow, the onsen and Kenji’s hometown, without rushing.

What winter guests said

I was a little worried about traveling to a cold region in the cold season, but the rooms were warm, and the bedding and heaters in the bedroom were perfect. It was very comfortable.
— K. / Airbnb / February 2026 (translated from Japanese)

The parking space had been cleared of snow, so we could park right away, even in the snow.
